Trotton Estate Vineyard
Robin and Carolyn Butler, the owners of Trotton Estate Vineyards, in their spare time were amateur polo players but when they stopped playing polo and no longer had as many horses, they had to think what to do with their fields.
The usual and the more unusual came to mind, cattle, sheep, llamas . . . until they were driving along the A272 between Petworth and Midhurst and saw new vineyards being planted by established producers such as Nyetimber and Upperton. They realised that their fields at Gatehouse Farm in Trotton were on the same belt of green sand together with similar south facing slopes.
The decision was made and Trotton Estate Vineyards was in the making. Their first stop was Plumpton College to start the learning curve followed by the first vineyard planting in 2013 and two more in 2015. Carolyn is totally hands on in the vineyard nurturing her vines to the optimum for the first harvest in October 2015 and despite the wet summer, the crop transpired to be excellent resulting in their Brilliant Bacchus with a dash of Pinot Gris 2015. Once the grapes are harvested they go directly to Simon Woodhead at Stopham where he turns these wonderful grapes into great wine with his legendary ‘passion and precision’.
The 2015 was such a success that it is already sold out so orders are now being taken for the 2016 which should be available around July 2017.
The 2016 is expected to be another success story as, despite a low yield due to the cold Spring, the quality of the yield was exceptional.
If you would like to visit Trotton Estate just email or call Carolyn. Apart from touring the immaculate vineyards and tasting the wine, the view of the South Downs alone is worth the visit.
