Vinho Regional Lisboa
For those of you familiar with Portugal, Lisboa was previously known as Extremadura. It runs north along the coast until it joins the Ribatejo. Consequently a considerable amount of this region has the west wind challenging the grapes to ripen.
The vineyards where the grapes are grown for the wine we have chosen, however, is produced close to the village of Arruda dos Vinhos. The name alone gives away this exceptional pocket where the vineyards are tucked away behind a ridge of hills which protects them from the wind. Like the Douro, the hills are steep but the climate a little warmer and less wet. In his fashion, therefore, the grapes have the space to drain and ripen well and the red wines, particularly, can be top class.
