Dona Maria Reserva 2011
The Story:
We were already familiar with Julio’s wines and therefore we were delighted to discover that we would be able to represent his Dona Maria Rosé and Dona Maria Tinto Reserva in the UK but even more delighted when we met Julio at his family home, Quinta do Carmo, to taste the vintages we would be offering. Quinta do Carmo is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent country houses in Portugal. The house was built by King João V in the 18th century and was gifted to Dona Maria, a beautiful courtesan, with whom, the story goes, the King was passionately in love.

Tasting notes:
Lovely Alentejan nose . . you can really smell the olives, the cork trees, the very earth in which the vines are grown. The palate is much more fruity with a very rounded mouth feel with some mineral notes interrupting any complacency and so maintaining the complexity of this wine throughout its very long finish. It goes on forever and gets better and better.

Terroir:
The Dom Marinho vineyard is made up of around 12.5 hectares of old vines producing low but quality yields. The vines are protected to the north by the Serra de Sousel and planted on clay and limestone soils.
Vinification
The grapes are crushed in traditional lagares. Lagares are concrete containers which provide a solid base for the workers to stand in and crush the grapes with their bare feet. It is thought that the sensitivity of the sole of the foot allows for gentle crushing and thus the stems and the pips will not be damaged and so any bitterness will be excluded from the juice. After fermentation the wine is matured in new French oak barrels for one year.
