Encosta do Sobral Different Red Vinhas Velhas 2013
The Story:
Marco was introduced to us by a friend of ours, Paulo Santos, whose knowledge of wines is far outshone by his outstanding ability to ride a horse. Therefore Paulo needs all credit for finding this winery near Tomar. Perhaps the link is that Tomar is one of the last redoubts of the Knights Templar. By the time we came to meet Marco, we were late, Marco was fed up waiting for us and we were all happy to call it a day until Marco pulled the cork on the Different Red. ‘Dynamite’ says our tasting note at the time and any thoughts of calling it a day immediately evaporated.
Region: Ribatejano

Winemaker: Marco Crespo and Pedro Serreno
Tasting notes:
Stunning nose. Rich, earthy, powerful notes of dark, warm berries which follow through on to the palate. This is a big wine.

Technical Information
Classification: Vinho Regional Tejo
Grape: Tinta Roriz, Castelão, Baga, Trincadeira and other . . . in various combinations!
Terroir:
The vineyard slopes gently with a predominantly south facing aspect. The soil is schist and very dry making the roots of the vines struggle deep into the earth in search of water. The age of these vines (over 60 years and some of unknown vintage) and the depth of their roots give true complexity and richness to the grape juice.
Vinification
The grapes are hand picked with traditional fermentation on the skins controlled between 26˚C- 28˚C followed by a period of maceration. The wine spends 14 months in French oak barrels and 12 months in bottle before being offered to the market.
