Herdade Mouchão Tinto 2013
The Story:
This has been the estate's most important label and flagship wine, since it sold its first bottle in 1954 and for which the Herdade has become famous. It has taken us almost three years to persuade the Herdade to allow us to offer it to you.
Region: Alentejo
Tasting notes:
Mouchão is a full, deep coloured wine with the concentration and spiciness of the Alicante Bouschet combined with the elegance of the Trincadeira and a tannic structure which enables the development in bottle for which it is so well known.

Terroir:
Undulating and stony surrounded by fig trees which ripen at the same time as the grapes . . . . and the sweet, succulent figs tempt the birds more than the grapes . . . so these lucky grapes are left in peace so arriving at the winery in perfect condition.
Vinification
The grapes are hand harvested in 20kg boxes and taken straight to the lugares – the traditional stone tanks where they are gently trodden by foot twice a day for about 5-6 days. After the first winter 25% of the wine goes into oak barrels with the remainder placed into 5000 litre oak and mahogany vats (foudres) for 24 months. After the third year the final selection is made before bottling and left for a further 24-26 months in air conditioned cellars.
