Santa Caterina Branco 2016
The Story:
This wine goes completely against the grain as we have no ‘story’ to tell other than we haven’t got a clue how it ended up in our fridge but it did and . . . it contains Chardonnay! So as the winemaker at Quinta dos Termos had his ‘deslize’ , this is ours! We have excused ourselves in the sense that the name of the wine is a tribute to Catherine of Braganza who married Charles II and who became our Queen between 1662 -1685. A bit of British history.
Region: Península de Setúbal
Producer: Bacalhôa
Winemaker: Filipa Tomaz da Costa
Tasting notes:
A gorgeous colour of straw wants to make you gulp it straight down but the rich nose makes you pause to anticipate what you are about to receive . . . richness and freshness, flowers and minerals, pineapples and nuts . . . mmmm.

Technical Information
Grape: 50% Fernão Pires, 30% Arinto, 20% Chardonnay
Terroir:
The Fernão Pires and Arinto are grown on the sandy soils of the Setúbal Peninsula with the Chardonnay close by on the limestone slopes of the Arrabida Mountain which fall gently down to the magnificent unspoilt beaches. A Mediterranean climate with constant sun cooled by salty sea breezes is a winning combination for ripening these lovely grapes.
Vinification
This is clever. Before blending , the Fernão Pires and Arinto are fermented and remain in their stainless steel tanks which gives the wine its freshness and the Chardonnay, after fermentation, spends a short time in new French oak barrels which gives the wine its richness.
